Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States.
Breast augmentation can give a woman’s bust a fuller, firmer appearance by way of breast implants. Implants are filled with silicone gel or saline (salt water). Breast enlargement is accomplished by inserting the implant behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscles, and may be combined with other procedures such as a breast lift for optimal results. In order to keep scar visibility to an absolute minimum, Dr. Kaufman places the incisions at inconspicuous locations, usually under the breast, around the lower part of the areola, or in the armpit. The method of inserting and positioning the implant, as well as the type of implant used, will depend on your preferences, your anatomy, and Dr. Kaufman’s recommendation.
Breast augmentation can be done for several different reasons:
- To enhance the body contour of a woman, who for personal reasons, feels that her breasts are small
- To correct a loss in breast volume after pregnancy or surgery
- To balance asymmetry in breast size
- As a reconstructive technique for various conditions
- To replace existing breast implants for medical or cosmetic reasons
Throught a woman’s lifetime, various natural factors such as aging, pregnancy, nursing, weight gain or loss, and gravity produce changes in the texture and appearance of a her breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and begin to sag. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can raise and reshape sagging breasts, restoring their youthful shape and appearance. The procedure can also reposition the nipple and reduce the size of the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple). If your breasts have lost both shape and volume after pregnancy, breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can enhance both the contour and size of your breasts. Dr. Kaufman will carefully consult with you on how to optimize your results, giving your breasts the most natural and elegant look and feel.

Excessively large breasts, or macromastia, can cause back, shoulder, and breast pain, improper posture, skin rashes, skeletal deformities, and low self-esteem. Reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction surgery, is done to provide relief from these symptoms, but can also enhance the appearance of the breasts. Although there are a variety of different surgical techniques used to reduce and reshape large breasts, all procedures will remove fat and breast-gland tissue and tighten the skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body. After careful evaluation of your breasts, Dr. Kaufman will consult with you on which technique is best for you.

Breast cancer is a common disease, occurring in nearly 1 in 9 women in the United States. Although advances in medical and surgical treatment have allowed for breast conservation, oftentimes a mastectomy (breast removal) is needed. In the past, this disfiguring operation has left women with cosmetic deformities with devastating psychological consequences. Modern surgical technology makes it possible to reconstruct a natural-looking breast after mastectomy for cancer or other diseases. The procedure is commonly begun and sometimes completed immediately following mastectomy, so that the patient wakes with a new breast mound. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin months or years after mastectomy. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, both with and without implants; Dr. Kaufman will diligently work together with you and your surgeon in deciding which option is best for you. Breast reconstruction does not affect the recurrence of cancer, does not cause any other diseases, and does not affect chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, is a rarely discussed, all too common condition. There is often no known cause for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or other medical conditions. Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and/or skin from the breasts, resulting in a contoured chest that is flatter, firmer, and more masculine. It can be combined with other body contouring procedures, including liposuction. Although there are a variety of surgical techniques to perform gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Kaufman will carefully consult with you on how to optimize your results.
